Our human capacity for self-awareness is often considered as a defining feature of human consciousness, and a catalyst for human flourishing as well as suffering. Yet, despite its fundamental role in shaping human experience, critical aspects of self-awareness are absent in infants. What does the world look like to an infant without self-awareness? How does an infant acquire a self-awareness, and when it does, how does it change the trajectory of cognitive development? The answers to these questions have long-reaching implications for what it means to be human, for how we understand disorders of self-awareness, and how we evaluate the risks of self-aware AI. In my work, I try to answer these questions through studies with young infants in our Centre for Early Childhood Cognition. We use multiple methods, including neuroimaging and eye-tracking, to test new hypotheses about how an initial absence of self-awareness allows infants to effectively track others’ attention to learn about the world and how the emergence of a self-awareness is intricately tied to the nature of the interactions between infants and their caregivers.
Om underviser

Victoria Helen Southgate
Professor of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen with a research focus on social cognitive development in infancy. Her research explores how infants develop an understanding of self and other, and the developmental interplay between them. She received her PhD from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and was a postdoc and then a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow at the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development at Birkeck, University of London. She established the Centre for Early Childhood Cognition at the University of Copenhagen in 2018 with an ERC Consolidator Grant and currently leads an ERC Advanced Grant exploring the emergence of a self-awareness in early development.
